Come Friday August 6, former students of President’s College will be in reflective mode as they commence celebration of the premiere institution’s quarter of a century milestone. Twenty-five years have already elapsed since the School of Excellence opened its doors with the aim of delivering a sound education to some of the best young minds of this country.
Hundreds of the school’s alumni, including those from the first batch in 1985 to the recent 2009 graduates will be taking part in this extravaganza which will last until Sunday August 8.
Reunion Weekend 2010 kicks off on the morning of August 6 with a formal ceremony at the College’s campus. The centrepiece of the weekend is a massive giveback exercise at the school’s Golden Grove East Coast Demerara location on Friday August 6 and Saturday August 7. Alumni will engage in activities including: painting, classroom restorations, the installation of a volleyball court, refitting of Science, Electrical and Woodworking Laboratories, cleanup, trees planting, and donations of various computers, electrical equipment and school supplies.
The former students will also participate in a renowned impromptu cultural show and lime on the same Friday evening and enjoy the benefits of “Dance with Guitars” on Saturday evening at the formal ball slated to be held in Georgetown. The following Sunday will see the ever competitive Diamond, Agate, Jasper and Gold houses vie for the overall sports championship trophy. The past and current teachers, as well as upper level students are all invited to the Sunday Fun and Sports Day. Throughout Reunion Weekend 2010, alumni will engage in networking with an emphasis on building local and overseas alumni chapters. Reunion Weekend 2010 aspires to be a catalyst for the revival of President’s College as the School of Excellence.
After 25 years since its inauguration, many of the school’s graduates are already accomplished professionals in their respective fields and as such, some corporate sponsors and many former students have already committed to contributing to the College.
The alumni has over the years pointed to the necessity to preserve the culture and value system of competitive learning, discipline, excellence, tolerance, sharing, co-operation and sacrifice in the absence of race and class that has defined the unique experience at the outstanding institution. “PC Alumni see this system as the school’s greatest legacy and its most striking difference when compared to other secondary schools in Guyana,” a statement detailed.
As such, the Alumni have met with Minister of Education, Shaik Baksh, the Chairman of the School’s Board, the Principal and other officials to discuss the reunion and the plans to assist the College.
It is the hope of the Alumni to launch a volunteering and mentoring programme at the College, to establish a future endowment fund, focus on specific projects and to fund various scholarships to students.
The reunion is being organised by the New York based alumni body, President’s College Alumni Incorporated (PCAI) in conjunction with President’s College Old Student’s Association (PCOSA). Pre-registration is strongly encouraged as a significant number of alumni have already confirmed attendance and space is limited for the upcoming ball. Alumni who require more information about the reunion, tickets, fees, and other features should visit the website www.pcosa-ny.org and/or send an email to: [email protected]. Alumni in Guyana should contact Reinetta Persaud at 220-4943 or 616-8194 or Sharon Dillon at 219-2872 regarding payment and other details.
