A Phagwah Day outing ended tragically for 23-year-old fireman, David Mc Kenzie, after he was killed in a crash at around 19:00 hrs yesterday while riding his motorcycle near Grove, East Bank Demerara.
David Mc Kenzie of Nismes, West Bank Demerara, sustained multiple injuries after crashing into a cyclist and slamming into the back of a vehicle.
He died shortly after he was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre.
The injured cyclist, identified as Sasenarine Kowlessar, was taken to the same institution and was still unconscious up to late yesterday evening.
A friend of Mc Kenzie’s told Kaieteur News that he and others had accompanied Mc Kenzie on an outing to a creek on the Soesdyke/Linden highway earlier in the day.
They then left the area and were riding their motorcycles in the vicinity of Grove, East Bank Demerara when the accident occurred.
However, the friend said that he did not see what transpired since the firefighter was some distance ahead of him.
According to reports, Mc Kenzie was heading north along the public road when a cyclist rode into his path. It is alleged that the fireman collided with the cyclist then slammed into the back of a parked vehicle before landing heavily on the roadway. He was taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where medical staff tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate him.
Relatives said that Mc Kenzie had been employed with the Guyana Fire Service for about four years.
