…Victim lapsed into unconsciousness after incident
A 52-year-old mechanic, slightly deaf to boot, yesterday appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson to answer a charge of indecent assault.
According to reports, the defendant on September 13, indecently assaulted a woman, by forcing himself upon her.
Richard Benjamin had reportedly been confronted by the woman in her home, when she asked him what it was exactly that he was doing there.
He allegedly picked the woman off her feet and carried her to the upper flat, into a room.
He reportedly forced himself upon the woman and proceeded to indecently assault her. Before the mechanic could go any further, however, a young child that was in the house at the time walked into the room.
The child had overheard unusual noises coming from the upper flat and proceeded to investigate. After reaching the room the child saw the defendant over the helpless woman.
Acting the only way possible, the child picked up a broom and dealt Benjamin several lashes before running down the stairs to report to her father.
Kaieteur News understands that the victim was so distraught over the incident that she reportedly slipped into a coma for several days; awakening last Monday.
Benjamin was remanded and is scheduled to return to court October 25.
