Hundreds of Guyanese flocked the Timehri Primary School yesterday, as the Guyana Watch medical team took its free clinic to the East Bank Demerara community.
While lauding Guyana’s health care system, the doctors expressed their opinion that persons need to be educated on how to treat their illnesses.
Dr. Rohinie Haar said, yesterday, that most of the patients seen are either diabetic or suffer from high blood pressure.
“Prevention is the best way to manage it and we try to treat as many persons that we can. The health care system in Guyana is pretty good because from what I have seen, the doctors are giving them the right medications but it’s difficult for some of them to go to the Georgetown Public Hospital for additional treatment,” Dr. Haar said.
She noted that the Ministry of Health needs to permanently place more doctors in the rural areas so as to meet the needs of the people.
“I think that this would be the best thing because for all these chronic diseases, patients need to see a doctor every three months. If doctors have a good relationship with their patients then it would make them comfortable and encourage them to treat themselves properly.”
Meanwhile, visiting Guyana for the first time is Dr. Chilembwe Mason who noted that he is impressed with the health care system in Guyana. He said that most of the cases he has dealt with thus far have to do with chronic and acute health care issues.
“The people are pretty well taken care of and have access to good health care but there are a lot of people with untreated congenital heart diseases that need to be treated and these are the cases that we are trying to identify,” Dr. Mason said.
Yesterday the team of doctors saw 496 patients, among them 278 adults.
It was noted that 42 persons were treated for dentistry, while eight persons had cardiac problems.
The campaign is a free medical clinic put on by Guyana Watch, a non-governmental organisation made up of mostly overseas-based Guyanese that has been bringing a team of doctors to Guyana for the past 17 years.
The team will next take the clinic to Aurora, Essequibo Coast, tomorrow.
