Dear Editor,
In reply to a KN letter (dated January 31, 2017), “Sports bar at Pouderoyen is a thriving legal business” I wish to state at the onset that I do not hope to engage in a to-and-fro with the writer except to say that he/she has not addressed the sole thrust of the letter which is that loud music is played on the premises and it goes way into the wee hours of night. Few of the facts stated in the initial letter of complaint have been denied by the writer who even admits that the elderly man died. He disputes however’ that the man, who died of heart complications having been exposed to those unbearable decibels, died as a result of the noise.
Whether this is so or not is not within my remit to decide. The fact remains that the noise emanating from this business is unpleasant at best and repugnant at the very worst. Kudos to the owners for their commitment to the corporate, social responsibility, by outfitting a football squad or feeding the hungry and providing employment to residents.
This is not a source of contention. What residents are angry about is the loud and consistent noise. At no time was there any mention of a plot to have the business operations closed or have there been any attempts to disrupt a “community event” and “affect the operations of a legitimate business” as the writer puts it. The general consensus is, that residents are fed up and frustrated with the noise, and have been complaining to no avail. Some are even afraid to speak out given the owners’ ties to the Guyana Police Force but would confide in each other in hushed tones.
The writer saw it fit to point out that the bar is not operated by the policeman himself but his relatives. Moreover, this policeman, whose family operates the business, is in the best position to advise his relatives that they must uphold the law and not flout it. It is a fact too that the police regularly conduct raids and make checks at the location but this is in response to the number of complaints and phone calls from affected residents.
Albeit, some of these very officers have joined in the revelry and have turned a blind eye to the illegalities given that the business is linked to one of their own. There is evidence that on numerous occasions, the merrymakers have engaged in the smoking of illicit drugs on the premises not to mention the colourful and decorative language they use in the hearing of our children. This does nothing to engender the true community spirit spoken of by the purported “concerned resident” or the corporate, social responsibility which the writer so lavishly outlined. Finally, I stand by my initial contention, without fear of contradiction and I speak on behalf of several residents when I say that the noise from this bar is disturbing and offensive and has caused discomfort, disquiet and distress to residents there.
Concerned Resident
