Former Chief Librarian of the National Library, Gillian Thompson who was killed in an accident on Christmas Eve day, will be laid to rest today.
Kaieteur News was told by a relative of Thompson’s that there will be a brief viewing of the body at the Merriman’s Funeral Home from 12:30hrs.
The body will then be taken to the Trinity Methodist Church on Leopold and High streets for tributes. This is to be followed by a funeral service at 14:30hrs.
Thompson, 47, was killed by a speeding car at the corners of New Garden and North Road, Georgetown on December 24, 2013.
On Thursday evening last, Thompson’s relatives, friends and colleagues of the Ministry of Education gathered where the accident occurred, to pay tributes.
Many echoed praises of Thompson whom they said was an extremely organized individual who kept the family together.
According to relatives, Gillian Thompson was the ninth of 11 siblings, and is close to them all.
“Gillian was a family person. She kept track of birthdays and family events, and she was just always involved, and always showed interest in everybody, even though we don’t always have the time,” one relative said.
He noted that the woman was particularly close to her nieces and nephews.
“She is always the person we would go to for help. She always got the best advice to give, and she was a genuine person that everybody loved,” the man said.
He recalled that the entire Christmas season was one which was observed with teary eyes and a heavy heart, since “Gillian didn’t deserve this.”
The now dead woman spent the last 17 years of her life working at the National Library.
Meanwhile, following her demise, 24-year-old Odida Underwood was charged with dangerous driving which resulted in her death. Underwood was granted $500,000 bail, and was also fined $20,000 for driving without a licence, $35,000 for driving a vehicle without insurance and $30,000 for driving a vehicle without the consent of the owner, with alternative jail sentences for each.
