… more projects on the cards
Renovation work has begun on the Good Samaritan Home at Stanleytown, New Amsterdam compliments of the New Amsterdamers International Inc.
The group, which has over 1700 members sprinkled across the world, is made up of New Amsterdamers. The group is also on Facebook.
Members exist in Canada, London, Germany and the USA.
According to Treasurer of the organization, Keith Humphrey, the Good Samaritan senior citizens home for women, is going to be renovated to become a better living facility for residents there.
He added that future projects which the group is going to undertake include is rehabilitation of the Viola Nursery School and installing some road- lighting around New Amsterdam.
There is an Executive Committee and Steering Committee as well as representatives who are expected to mobilize others to come on board.
There will be reconstruction of the fence and do repairs around the building. There are some areas of ‘endangerment’ for the residents; windows, doors, and other parts.
Termites infest the building which will be taken care of as well as painting the entire building and changing the windows.
Local members of the group include Stacy Correia, Ava Lindie and Project Advisor, Shaundel Phillips.
Joyce Anthon, a representative of the Good Samaritan Home, expressed thanks to the group.
She added that the home used to be managed by all the churches in New Amsterdam. However, all of the churches abandoned the project and only the Roman Catholic Church continued to upkeep the home.
There are 11 residents currently in the Good Samaritan Home.
They do not pay to reside in the home. The utility costs and food are provided by the Catholic organization, the St Vincent de Paul Society, of which Anthon is a member.
Anthon made a call to other organizations to come on board and assist the home since funds are running low at the moment.
