Administrator of the Palms Institution, yesterday, in response to an article carried in Monday edition of the Kaieteur News, said the article does not truly represent what took place.
It was claimed in yesterday’s edition of this newspaper that the institution was reluctant to accept 76-year old Olive King, who is terminally ill and who has no one to care for her.
Residents of Newsettlers Arcade, Mocha, East Bank Demerara, where the woman resides had alleged that the Palms administration indicated that there was no room for the elderly woman.
They also claimed that the Palms administration indicated that whenever someone dies and space becomes available, the woman would be accepted.
But according to Mrs. Govind Singh, the Palms received an application from Mr. Joseph Stephen about two weeks ago, asking for his ‘reputed wife’ Olive King to be admitted to the institution. Singh went on to state that at the time the Palms hadn’t any opening and that this was communicated to Mr. Stephen.
Further, Singh said that when an application is made to the Palms a team is dispatched to carry out its own investigation about the person being recommended.
Singh said it was found that King, for whom Mr. Stephen made the application, was living with him, thus she was not a destitute.
He went on to explain that the Palms cares specifically for destitute and persons who genuinely have no immediately relatives to take care of them.
“The woman in question is living with Mr. Stephen, so one she has a place where she lives, two the level of medical care which the woman requires cannot be had at the Palms,”.
Singh further added that despite the fact that the institution hadn’t any opening, the social workers attached to the institution still tried assisting both Stephen and his reputed wife. According to Singh, currently King attends the Mocha Arcadia Health Centre and is on numerous medications.
However, given the severity of her illness the doctor at the centre recommended that she be taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Around noon yesterday officials from the Mocha Arcadia Health Centre were awaiting an ambulance to transport King to the GPHC.
Singh said that after her admission and full medical attention, the Palms, based on recommendation from the hospital, then it would be determined if King would be admitted to the Palms.
Over the weekend, 85-year-old Stephen approached this publication claiming that he and other villagers were trying to get the ailing woman into the Palms but were met with hostility.
