Two months after it disappeared, a police revolver was yesterday dug up from the Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara yard of Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh.
The weapon with all of its matching rounds was recovered after a security guard on duty at the Minister’s residence saw it peeping out from a clump of grassless earth.
Investigators were immediately summoned to the scene and they subsequently verified that the weapon was that which was reported missing by another security guard in February.
Two months ago, a female security guard attached to the Special Constabulary, who was on duty at the Minister’s residence, reportedly lost the weapon while using the washroom.
The Special Constable had claimed that she had taken off her holster with the weapon inside and rested it on the floor while she used the washroom.
She left the washroom and returned to her post but forgot to retrieve the weapon.
A few minutes later she checked for it but the weapon had disappeared.
She was subsequently charged with the theft of the weapon and is currently out on substantial bail.
At the time of the disappearance of the weapon, the Minister’s gardener and driver were also on the premises.
A police source on the East Coast of Demerara told this newspaper that the recent heavy rains contributed to the discovery of the weapon.
The source said that the downpours may have loosened the earth and caused the weapon which was buried just below the surface to show up.
Investigators believe that the weapon was buried after police commenced their investigation into its disappearance.
With its recovery, the police have started to conduct further investigations and will be seeking the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions on the way forward.
