Bride of four months hacked to death
– mother stabbed with pitch-fork
A part-time butcher went berserk yesterday afternoon at D’Edward Village, West Coast Berbice, hacking his wife to death and stabbing his mother-in-law with a pitchfork before fleeing.
Trevlyn Nicholson, 23, was chased from her home through a street in the village and chopped on the legs, back and head, before eventually collapsing and dying in front of a church from a gaping wound to her neck.
Before killing his wife, the suspect, identified as Andy Nicholson, attacked his mother-in-law Rolene Alexander, 47, with a pitchfork, stabbing her in the head, hand and forehead.
However, the woman managed to escape and seek refuge in a neighbour’s house.
She was later treated at the Fort Wellington Hospital before being transferred last night to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation.
Kaieteur News understands that the couple had shared a common-law relationship for several years, but only got married four months ago. The slain woman is survived by a son who is about seven years old.
A resident who accompanied the survivor to the hospital described the suspect as a violent and jealous individual, who habitually beat his wife.
Kaieteur News was told that the suspect had chopped his spouse a few months ago but had then gone into hiding. According to the neighbour, he eventually returned and married the abused woman.
Eyewitness said that yesterday’s rampage began when the butcher arrived home and found that his wife was not there.
A resident said that Nicholson’s husband immediately headed for the ‘sea dam’, where his wife was tending to the couple’s cattle.
An eyewitness said that the enraged man threw Nicholson to the ground and began to beat her.
However, the woman’s mother, Rolene Alexander, and neighbours intervened and the man appeared to clam down and went home with his wife and his mother-in-law.
Shortly after, the fracas erupted again and Nicholson’s husband reportedly armed himself with a pitchfork and attacked his mother-in-law, inflicting deep gashes on her hands and head, before she managed to escape to a neighbour’s home.
The man then turned his wrath on his wife, Trevlyn Nicholson.
Eyewitness said that the suspect picked up a cutlass and began to chase Nicholson, who fled down a street, before being cornered and hacked to death near a Pentecostal church, even as several neighbours looked on helplessly.
After she collapsed, the suspect fled in the vicinity of the Berbice River.
Police scoured the area but failed to locate him.
Nicholson’s murder comes in the wake of the killing of two other women this week.
On Sunday, 26-year-old environmental officer Alicia Foster was gunned down outside her home in David Street, Kitty.
On Monday, Nafeeza Khan, 22, was chopped to death at Goed Fortuin, West Bank Demerara.
The prime suspect is her reputed husband of five years, Mohan Basdeo, 34, who is now in police custody.
