Many residents of southern Georgetown want to see some of the palm trees in their neighbourhood cut down. And they have taken their request to the Mayor and City Council.
Residents of North East La Penitence are among those who have been complaining about some of the trees. The source of their contention is those that are obviously weak and appear to be threatening property.
During the squall last Sunday, a resident of North East La Penitence stated, a gigantic palm tree collapsed onto his garage and damaged his motor vehicle that was parked inside.
His neighbours reported damage to their fence which enclosed their property, all caused by collapsing palm trees.
The residents yesterday told this newspaper that numerous calls and complaints were made via the Promenade Gardens to the city mayor himself, some since December, but only promises have been made to remove the hazardous trees.
Residents also informed this newspaper that the M&CC recently visited the area after the storm to remove the trees from behind the property of the resident whose garage was damaged and from the roadway, but paid no attention to the nearby trees that have fallen, or the rotting ones that are currently standing.
One of the residents said she asked one of the Council workers about a tree that is located in an adjoining alley. ‘It deh by you yard so is you private matter, and you got to move it yuself.”
The woman insists that the tree is separated from her property by a drain.
The resident declared that she was annoyed with that remark, and she is fearful for her home; but, most importantly, she is also fearful for the lives of both herself and three children.
