Dear Editor;
Kindly allow me a space in your column to express my discontentment with the Lethem Town Council and the manner in which things are being done.
I am a resident of the Culvert City Housing scheme and a supporter of the APNU Government.
There is a public space in this scheme, that was implemented for recreational use and over the past years this space was unoccupied and filled with overgrown vegetation. In 2015, the residents of the Culvert City community made a special effort to construct a recreational park. Monetary contributions were made by these residents to make this project a success. During this time I have never witnessed the Mayor’s presence nor to my knowledge, did he acknowledge this community effort.
Nevertheless, the recreational park was completed and we were able to enjoy the sweet fruits of our labor.
The children of Culvert City and neighbouring communities of Lethem, Tabatinga and St. Ignatius Village, flooded the park on Christmas night and every other day after this. It was a pleasure to witness such joy and happiness.
One Saturday afternoon, I decided to take my children to the park and to my surprise the park was devoid of all the facilities and they were dumped in an empty lot. I was left in dismay so I began asking neighbours of what took place.
I was then informed that the Town Council is rehabilitating the park. The Town Council never held a meeting to inform residents of this decision and to make matters worse, the manner in which these recreation equipment were dumped, bears a resemblance to a garbage dumpsite.
The rehabilitated compound looks beautiful but the equipment are still lying in the empty lot.
The Mayor and the Town Council have disrespected and insulted the residents of this community and it makes me sick to my stomach and I am now wondering if this is what my Government advocated for.
To add insult to injury, there is the Holiday Park situated in Old Lethem that is in desperate need of rehabilitation.
Works commenced last year and were halted for unknown reasons. To this date, nothing else has been done to the park, it is left abandoned and the recreational equipment are lying in the compound of the Town Council.
My conclusion is that the Mayor cannot prioritize his projects; his advisors are just as self-opinionated as he is and most importantly he does not recognize and respect community efforts.
I believe he owes the people of Culvert City an explanation and an apology for the blatant disrespect. Let me further add that if the Mayor continues to behave like the world revolves around him, the APNU coalition will not stand a chance in Region 9, come next election.
