Dear Editor,
During the many conversations focused on the assassination of Mr. Courtney Crum-Ewing, several persons pleaded with me to step down, to stop writing. I was, and am, touched, but here is where I stand.
It is too late in the day to retreat, to hesitate, or to change direction. The boat has already left the harbour. I would not be able to face myself by taking the easy way out. I am too old to run, and too set in my ways to quit. What would I say to God, whose mandate is pursue social justice, be outspoken against wrongdoing, regardless of the fallout.
No one knows at this time how many more would have to meet the violent, abrupt fate of this targeted citizen, this unsung patriot. No one should be ignorant of the history of disobedient, wicked, evil Israelites-God’s chosen from the Old Testament-who killed many of their prophets. It was the same prophets who exposed evil in the midst, who spoke to truth, and who paid the ultimate price. If such is the price in the offing, then so be it.
Here a man is eliminated in cold blood for daring to encourage others to go out and vote when the time comes. This has risen to the level of a capital offence in 21st century, democratic Guyana. When picketing, and exhorting, and writing become perilous activities, then it is time for change, time for people to go, time for standing up and resisting mightily.
It is a savage telling irony-indeed, a Guyanese tragedy-that fifty years after Selma, Birmingham, Montgomery, the three murdered Freedom Riders, and Medgar Evans martyred on his own doorstep, and all for voting efforts, that a man is targeted, hunted down, and gunned down for doing the exact same thing here in Guyana. I am sure that those responsible would be in the vanguard of the speechmakers paying hypocritical tribute to the struggles for those precious sacred rights up North, while imitating Bull Connor and Wallace and Faubus right here. Remember: segregation today, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever! Or in local parlance –this is a ‘coolie party.’
So the hard journey continues; the struggle for what is right intensifies. There is the compelling need to stay focused, disciplined, resolute, and prayerful; and let no one dictate the agenda, or its terms. God is in charge. This I believe. There are many who share some of these sentiments; we go forth to whatever awaits.
