A 13-month-old baby boy was yesterday rescued by his father from a burning building at
Lot 97 Fifth Street, Industry, East Coast Demerara.
The fire which started around 11:30 hrs destroyed the upper flat of the two-storey building and left at least eight persons homeless.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. There is a supermarket located in the bottom flat of the building- it was not damaged.
When Kaieteur News arrived at the scene yesterday, the owners, Natesh Seenarine and his wife, Marissa, were too devastated to speak to the media.
Natesh Seenarine would only say that he was in the lower flat of the building when he saw smoke emerging from the top flat.
“When I see the smoke, I run upstairs and grabbed the baby and come downstairs,” the father of four said.
He sustained minor burns to his ear and face while trying to save his son.
One of Seenarine’s workers, Amir Persaud, said, “Me bin deh downstairs and me see de smoke. Me run up for the baby but Natesh bin done had he so me come downstairs back and help empty the supermarket.”
Neighbours said that they heard no explosion. “We just see the smoking and we hurry
and call the fire service.”
