Some members of the private sector have responded to the Environmental Community Health Organization (ECHO)’s calls to contribute to a healthy environment.
According to Royston King, Executive Director, Hemraj Kissoon of H&L Kissoon; Chandradat Chintamani of Demtoco; and Victor Netram of Netram and Sons Recycling Company, have pledged their support for the Georgetown Schools’ Recycling Programme.
Each company is contributing to the recycling process, King stated, as 50 receptacles were donated by Kissoon, wheelies to transport the receptacles were donated by Chintamani, and the collection and recycling of the bottles will be executed by Netram.
He noted that Netram and Sons Recycling, which has its operations on the East Bank of Demerara, will be purchasing the plastic bottles from ECHO. Though, a price was not negotiated as yet, the income generated will be given back to the schools and communities in the execution of environmental projects, King stated.
ECHO is anticipating that other partners will come on board and support this six-month pilot project that is being rolled out in 40 schools in Georgetown. After the pilot period is over, the project will be evaluated and modifications will be made where necessary and rolled out in Regions Three and Ten. In addition, schools will be given prizes for full participation.
According to Netram, the company has a small recycling plant in operations and recently it purchased a large recycling plant. The plastic bottles purchased from ECHO will boost the amount of bottles that are processed into Pet Flakes.
He noted that this programme undertaken by ECHO will help reduce the number of plastic bottles that end-up in canals clogging the drainage system. However, the programme is heavily dependent on students’ participation, as such the receptacles must be brightly coloured to attract their attention.
“We are looking to do a partnership with ECHO and hope this is a new beginning for a good marriage,” Victor Netram stated.
