CORRIVERTON, CORENTYNE – A Corentyne man suspected of being part of a three-man gang operating in the Upper Corentyne area was yesterday sentenced to two years in prison.
Orin Sam, called ‘Yankee’, a 34-year-old of Princetown, Corriverton, appeared before Magistrate Krishendat Persaud at the Springlands Magistrate’s Court to answer a charge of escape from lawful custody.
He also had four other charges slapped on him – three counts of robbery under arms and a simple larceny – three to which he was not required to plead.
Last September 17, the man escaped from custody at the Fort Wellington Police Station. He was subsequently nabbed in New Amsterdam last Monday. To the escape charge he pleaded guilty.
On March 1, last, he, in the company of others, allegedly committed a robbery on victim Depak Ramsook at Race Course, Springlands. The victim was relieved at gunpoint of a $120,000 gold band; a diamond ring valued at $120,000; four gold rings worth $100,000; two gold chains valued at $600,000; a $40,000 mobile telephone and a $4,500 bottle of Johnny Walker Whisky.
On March 4, last at Springlands he allegedly robbed Ganesh Ramsahoye of four gold bangles worth $128,000; four gold chains worth $60,000; three pairs of gold earrings valued at $24,000; and a $32,000 gold band.
On June 19, at Number Sixty-one Village, the victim was Dolly Dash. She was robbed of cash and gold jewellery totaling $1.1 million.
Last year, on September 17, he allegedly stole parts from a motor car PKK 3770 belonging to Dushad Indarjeet.
The case was postponed until September 4, when it comes up for a report.
