Dear Editor,
I write to condemn the insensitive and reprehensible Kaieteur News article captioned “Essequibo woman rescued after suicide attempt by drowning,” published on March 24, 2021. In its haste to produce a sensational article, Kaieteur News ignored the principles of sympathy, discretion and sensitivity when reporting on issues associated with suicide, and chose to publish the name, age, photograph, and the place the subject is from. We must do better to protect the most vulnerable among us, instead of publicly shaming them and contributing to their distress.
Yours truly,
Anthony Autar
