DEAR EDITOR,
I have been following with interest Court proceedings in the Hague against Myanmar following a lawsuit filed by Gambia regarding allegations of genocide against Rohingya muslims by the military.
Of interest to note is that Aung San Suu Kyi, the de facto leader following democratic elections won by her party, was at one time regarded as the champion of Burmese democracy and a fierce critic of military rule. She is now before the World Court to defend allegations of genocide by the military!
This is perhaps one of the biggest ironic twists in modern political history. She is now a defender of the same military that denied her political power for over two decades of which fifteen of those years were spent under house arrest.
It is interesting to see how the matter will play out in the Hague. Regardless of the outcome, the reputation and image of Aung San Suu Kyi as a fighter for human rights and democracy in her country will be further diminished in the eyes of millions who at one time regarded her as a political icon.
It is pathetic to see images of her in the Hague in defence of the actions of the military. My own view is that she has now become a reluctant creature of the military despite the fact that her party won a resounding victory in democratic elections in November 2015.
I feel sorry for her. I have, in several letters in the media praised her for her bravery and courage in the struggle against military rule for which she was awarded the prestigious Nobel Prize. I still recognize her past contribution as a champion and role model for peace and democracy not only in her country but the world at large.
Something has definitely gone wrong. This is a case of the fragility of the human spirit and how easily someone can fall from grace.
