North New Amsterdam saved their best football for last as they registered a come from behind win edge Central New Amsterdam 3-2 on penalty kicks to take top honours in the final of the Hearts of Oak Masters Football Club Inter Ward football competition after their bruising encounter ended 1-1 after regulation time.
In the final played on Saturday evening under lights at the All Saints Scot Church Ground Princess Elizabeth Road, New Amsterdam, Berbice, which was the venue for all of the matches.
Central went ahead off the boot of the prolific Kelvin Joseph from the penalty spot when he netted the spot kick in the 7th minute. North, who showed improvement as the tournament went on, did not let the early goal daunt their spirits as the game see sawed and they were duly rewarded in the 55th minute when Orville Hinds let fly a ripper that hit the cross bar before bouncing into the goal.
In the ensuing penalty shootout Central can only blame themselves as most of their strikers missed the target.
East Canje was awarded third place as their opponent South New Amsterdam failed to show up for their match and in a feature veterans game, Georgetown Football Club edged out Hearts of Oak Masters 1-0 with Peter Lashley scoring in the second half.
In semifinal play, North New Amsterdam upstaged East Canje 2-0, while Central New Amsterdam upset South New Amsterdam 4-3 on penalty kicks after that game ended 1-1 at full time.
North got their goals off the boots of Graham Thomas who netted in the 6th minute and Delvin Ferdinand who scored in the 24th minute in a game that East Canje dominated.
In the second semifinal, South New Amsterdam squandered an early effort after the ever present Winston Benjamin split the defence to score in the 5th minute.
Central New Amsterdam New Amsterdam responded in the 54th minute off the boot of the prolific Kelvin Joseph. South player Seon Pilgrim received a red card during the game.
The presentation ceremony will be done on Saturday at the Scot Church Ground where cash, trophies and other incentives will be presented to the top teams, while a number of individual awards will be presented to the outstanding individual players.
The tournament was coordinated by former national player Neil “Grizzly” Humphrey with assistance from former national Kenrick Bowry and Randy ‘Blades’ Sears. (Samuel Whyte)
