Dear Editor,
It seems as though decadence in every sphere here in Guyana is so much the norm, that even the law enforcers have now become totally inured. In fact, these ‘guardians’ of society are themselves culpable. They themselves foster many peccadilloes, and this is quite disgusting indeed.
Just September 29, 2010, at the Annandale Market Road junction, a petite and petty police woman was involved in a verbal altercation with two male pranksters. These guys had fun at her expense; after all the police fraternity on the whole is characterized by grade 5-6 intelligence. Also right in Annandale, at the junction of Ramsingh and Market Streets, there are at least 10 males around the 14-19 age group, who are not in school, neither at work.
So as expected, their impish minds lead them to hurl invectives at passersby and school girls.
Their raucous cacophony is most annoying. They of course impede traffic, and since this has gone on uninterrupted, I suspect it will get worse. Recently this group of delinquents has turned to drinking and smoking. Many times the Vigilance police were alerted, but as expected ‘grade 5-6’ police caricatures-operatives are not inclined to respond. I guess an upset villager pent up anger, redounding in a beating/killing may do the trick.
Another bothering and running sore is that of these roving, vagrant junkies who are all over the village of Annandale. The most irksome aspect of these outcasts is that of their purloining behaviour.
They roam the village at nights and make off with people’s items-buckets, plants etc. You know what is most upsetting? The absolute negligence of the police patrols. Seldom would the police scour the village for these creatures.
The thing is that these recalcitrant elements are so readily and easily available, and yet Vigilance is immune to them. Here again, may an enraged response that engenders death may just do the trick. I hope the ‘nip in the bud’ metaphor still prevails.
