The National Blind Cricket team will today take on an under-15 sighted team at the Queenstown Community Centre. The exhibition match is part of the activities for a Fun-Day being organised by the Community Based Rehabilitation group at the Essequibo Coast village.
The 20 over match is scheduled for noon today, and is a collaboration between the Blind Cricket Association and the Disabled People Network. The match is partly sponsored by the Volunteer Service Organisation and the European Union.
Two members of the West Indies Blind Cricket Team, Oliver Keer and Ganesh Singh, will be participating in today’s match.
As part of their development drive, the Blind Cricket Association is attempting to get a Blind Cricket team established on the Essequibo Coast, and is using today’s exhibition match as a means of promoting the development drive.
The National Blind Cricket team has been participating in cricket matches since 2006. According to Ganesh Singh, cricket is not just a sport, but also a method of building capacity for blind athletes across the country.
Last Sunday, the National team played a similar exhibition match at the Diamond Community Centre where the team was split in two to have a seven aside match. Singh said that the sport, though relatively new in Guyana, has been around in Cricket history since the 1960’s in England. He went on to say that the response to the National Team has so far been favourable, but that the Blind Cricket Association still has trouble recruiting players.
The exhibition matches are being used to showcase the ability of the blind players, and to alter the general public’s view on differently able individuals.
The Blind West Indies Cricket Team has travelled as far as England and Pakistan to take part in competitions and tournaments, including the last Blind Cricket World Cup in 2006 and toured England in 2008.
