Dear Editor,
I have been reading about your emphasis on the leadership struggle in the PNCR — Robert Corbin versus Richard Van-West Charles.
The media’s emphasis on this skirmish has taken away attention from a much larger and even intense jockeying for power within the PPP.
In 2011, Bharrat Jagdeo may not seek to a third term through constitutional changes. The question then arises: Who will the PPP field as its Presidential Candidate?
There are two groups actively at work: Donald Ramotar-candidacy and the Dr Frank Anthony-candidacy.
Ramotar seems to be the inevitable choice given his wide support base at all levels. Anthony’s campaign is being led by the Chandarpals — Navin and Indra — with the likes of Neil Kumar and Fuzzy Sattaur as field workers.
It might be interesting to compare the two and this might tell us who will be the victor in this battle.
Ramotar has proven his leadership skills as the successor to Cheddi Jagan as General Secretary; he is grounded in the rank and file and has vast international standing.
He has kept the party together and saw three successful elections victory
Anthony on the other hand presided over the destruction of the PYO, youth wing of the PPP and has been the most ineffective First secretary; Mashramani is today near defunct under his Ministerial leadership. The poor handling of World Cup; the CARIFESTA payment fiasco and the Liliendaal Pool disgrace speak of his weakness.
The internal bruising battle in the PPP is expected to continue and may be more intense than what is taking place in the PNCR.
The public is watching closely.
