Dear Editor,
Recently there have been a few isolated heavy downpours of rain and this is all due to the May/June rainy season.
I am very convinced as a farmer, resident and senior citizen of Region Five that the works carried out by the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) and the Ministry of Agriculture will not go in vain.
I am also aware of all the interventions made by these agencies to assist the farmers by investing in proper drainage structures. Although all of this has happened, I only hope that they were cognizant of the approaching rainy season which is the largest rainy season traditionally.
I have heard that the Hydrometerlogical Office has predicted a normal rainy season, but with the weather patterns over the past years which have been directly related to climate change and its effects, I am not quite sure what to believe.
I am only hoping that the weather remains normal. I must also compliment the Hydromet Service for the more informative weather forecast on NCN Television, which is helpful to farmers like me.
After the last December/January rains thousands of acreages have been lost due to high intensity rains and of course our coastal nature – approximately six feet below sea level; this we all have to take into serious consideration.
I am however pleased to see that this government has placed special emphasis towards the growth and development of the agricultural sector.
This sector is now becoming one of the fastest growing sectors in this country and I wish to commend the hard working staff of the Ministry of Agriculture for making this happen.
I am quite sure it will not only benefit us farmers but the country and the Caribbean as a whole, since there is a very high demand for food in the rest of the world.
The works carried out in Region Five will surely benefit farmers and with the construction of the Belamy canal, it will surely take off excess water from the backlands reducing the effects of flooding.
In conclusion, I wish to encourage the respective agencies that are working in the interest of the farmers in this country to continue their hard work and your dedication will bear fruits and the rewards will come.
