Dear Editor,
The President of Guyana is doing the correct thing in introducing the polygraph test for certain categories of public servants.
I wish he will order the same for those officers working at the Customs and Excise Department in Anna Regina, on the Essequibo Coast.
Despite repeated revelations to that office pertaining to the unfair practices being undertaken by a particular unlicensed liquor restaurant situated in Anna Regina, the issue remains unattended. The officers are uncommitted to act, and are openly unresponsive.
This restaurant is now undergoing renovations in order to expand its illegal business, and in the process has caused legitimate businesses to suffer.
It appears as though some collusion is going on, since whenever there is a routine check by officers from Georgetown, they turn up with nothing. Yet this restaurant is busy all day, not selling soft drinks alone, of course!
The introduction of VAT means that legitimate businesses have to comply, but this is not done by this particular restaurant. I am therefore appealing to the Commissioner of the Guyana Revenue Authority to intervene so as to alleviate these unscrupulous elements within the business sector.
I hope the polygraph test arrive soon on the Essequibo Coast. May I suggest to the Commissioner that whenever officers are coming from Georgetown they do not inform the local office?
The same should be done countrywide.
