Minister of Education, Dr. Rupert Roopnaraine, has said that a high emphasis will be placed on including means of access for physically disabled students.
Most schools across the country, said the Minister, do not have facilities for these children and this is something that needs to be looked at.
He said that there is very little that can be done for schools which already exist but despite this, “We (Ministry) will see what has to be done with regard to the physical structure.”
The Minister in an elicited response also commented on such facilities being implemented at the University of Guyana. He stated that while he does not have the same control over the University as he does in schools, it is something he can argue for.
“I don’t have control over the University as we do in schools. The University is run by the University Council on which the government has representatives, but I can definitely argue for it,” said Dr. Roopnaraine.
Acknowledging his Ministry’s limitations with regard to quality educational opportunities for the nation’s children regardless of their physical and mental capacity, at a recent extension of the Diamond Special Needs School, Roopnaraine had applauded the efforts of those who fill this critical gap.
“We may not be able to always guarantee that all boats rise equally” Roopnarine stated at the recent extension of the Diamond Special Needs School, “But we must strive to ensure that all boats do rise.”
Every country demanding more and more taxes, not Guyana.
