The Guyana Power and Light (GPL) removed dozens of illegal connections yesterday in North Ruimveldt squatting area; but some residents stated that they would be reconnecting their illegal connections after GPL operatives leave the area.
The area which was visited by GPL Loss Reduction Unit is one of the many hotspots identified for countrywide raids.
With little care for the safety and the well being of others, various types of wires of all grades were being used to illegally connect to GPL utility poles. Some persons were arrested and taken to the police station. However, many of those with illegal connections are being forced to steal electricity since the area where they squat
is not regularized.
“I want a prepaid meter but I can’t have one because when I go into GPL they say I don’t have the right documents, so I am forced to illegally connect,” one resident related.
Residents were also found selling electricity from their homes to residents who were not connected to GPL service.
Although many persons were reluctant to speak, the billing statistics indicate that just over 68,000 consumers use up to 75Kwh per month, confirming that theft of electricity is not only a problem in un-served and recently served areas; but chronic among other consumers.
The reduction of losses, technical and non-technical, continues to be one of the key challenges facing the GPL despite continued reduction in non-technical losses.
The power company noted that anyone who tampers with, or permits tampering with, any meter that is used to measure the supply of electricity at that person/organisation’s supply point or any associated equipment is guilty of a felony.
GPL also noted that anyone supplying power to person/organisation’s by bypassing any meter that is used to measure the supply of electricity at that person’s supply point is also committing a felony.
The Field Services Department executed 123 raids in 2012, removing a total of 5,604 illegal connections, arresting and charging 292 persons of whom only 11 were convicted.
Every country demanding more and more taxes, not Guyana.
