DEAR EDITOR,
Thanks for publishing my letter under the title, “A criticism of the former Deputy Mayor” (KN, June 29, 2018).
Permit me, on a point of clarification and ensuring historical accuracy, to reference the ‘Editor’s note’ that accompanied said letter which stated: “Frank Campbell was a former Government Minister who became Editor-in-Chief and General Manager of the Guyana National Newspapers Limited [GNNL].”
The point I specifically made about Mr. Sherod Duncan, who is appointed, General Manager of GNNL, is that he is an “active politician” appointed to the position.
Indeed, Mr. Campbell held ministerial position. However, the difference and qualifier are: when Mr. Campbell was appointed to GNNL, he no longer held a ministerial portfolio and would therefore be considered, at time and duration of appointment, an inactive politician.
In the case of Mr. Duncan, he has received his appointment as General Manager of GNNL when he is actively engaged in politics, evident in the title he holds, viz, Councillor of the Georgetown Mayor and City Council.
Please note, at the time of writing, he still holds the political title, though he says he will not seek re-election. Given his antics, it’s not a statement considered to be written in stone.
Simply said, Mr. Duncan remains the only “active politician” to hold the title of General Manager of the GNNL. The ascription, i.e. active politician, is not befitting Mr. Campbell.
