Dear Editor;
I hope the opportunity can be given to me to have that space in your daily to accommodate my letter. I have living on the West Coast Berbice all my life and now a budding entrepreneur always fearful of being attacked and robbed. In the advent of fear, I have realized that there was a new development with my business community. Almost on a daily basis I would observe either two (2) jeeps marked Community Policing Patrol, sometimes carrying police and smartly dressed uniformed personnel whom I later learnt to be Community Police.
One day as I was at my business place, I was visited by a member of this organization who was very professional and who explained that they are conducting their routine patrol and whether I have any concern of a security nature and if I do she would furnish me with a mobile number as well as the police number. What strikes me most was the unique approach and method of conducting their business. I have never had such a pleasing experience. It was enough to remove any degree of fear. I continue seeing the patrol jeep. Another day as I was at my business place, I was approached by a well spoken elderly man who identified himself as the liaison officer. I entertained this man who spoke at length on his Ministry’s concerns pertaining to security. I was also offered some valuable security advice of which I will soon take on board, for the safety of my business.
As we wrap up our discussion, I enquired whether there’s a cost attached to the service and was told NO and that the Community Policing is a voluntary organization and one of its objective is to promote safe communities. I was almost blown apart by this fundamental change. As the officer left I came to the realization that this have never occurred. I never knew of such an organization. Subsequently, to my meeting with the Liaison officer, one Saturday morning I was in the market place and I saw the presence of the Community Police. I felt so good that on my return home, I briefly spoke with someone about this organization. From my discussion, though brief, I have learnt the organization is one behind the scene and have been contributing immensely to our stable situation. It’s said that good things come in small parcels. I am now awaiting other small parcels. The Community Policing is a unique show of a government concern, for the safety of its people. I congratulate this organization and would always be an eye for them. Continue the good work!
