Dear Editor,
Just before UF-PNC coalition, the late Ms. Janet Jagan used to taunt Mr. L.F.S. Burnham with:
All I wanted for Christmas
is my Prime Ministership,
my Prime Ministership,
see my Prime Ministership,
Gee, if I could only
have my Prime Ministership,
then I could wish you
“Merry Christmas!”
Ms. Jagan’s fears were justified when the Burnham/PNC Government later introduced the detention without trial act, which was designed to imprison political opponents.
Now we see history repeating itself in Guyana. The disciple, President Jagdeo, is imitating the Guyanese Dictatorial Master (Mr. Burnham) and likewise desires total dictatorship, yes total dictatorship for Christmas.
The naked display of contempt for the law and due process speak loudly how far we have returned to the ugly past. When we spoke out about these dictatorial tendencies being displayed with regards to the University of Guyana (UG) and education, many closed their eyes, ears, mouths and minds.
The Jagdeo Government has used his hand-picked henchmen to destroy the UG, Science and Technology at UG, and Education in Guyana.
It is disheartening that so soon after our dictatorial tragedies, President Jagdeo finds willing agents of destruction and intimidation within the Guyanese population to execute his dirty work and inflict pain on the Guyanese population.
These nefarious accomplices aid and abet President Jagdeo and his elite as they acquire unprecedented wealth and power.
We know that the Burnham dictatorship could not have succeeded without willing underlings to do his biddings of harassing, intimidating, beating, maiming, imprisoning and killing of citizens.
The recent photograph in Kaieteur News was quite striking in that it shows our police willingly arresting Mr. Freddie Kissoon and Mr. Mark Benschop. Were these officers so naïve or ethically challenged that they do not know that their actions constitute political harassment?
Unfortunately, these ‘devoted’ policemen show their lack of independence and willingness to please the ruling elite.
The current situation helps to understand why we cannot progress since some members of our police force allow themselves to be subject to the political whims and personal desires of the ruling elite.
I hope the executioners of such political acts of intimidation know that the populace and the world are watching. We are not amused; the ugly picture is imprinted forever.
The ordinary people who work hard to provide for their families are at the mercy of thugs who rob and kill with impunity. The PPP ruling elite commit fraud and acquire massive wealth without being questioned. The Guyanese people are caught between the vices of the criminal gangs and the PPP Government-sanctioned thugs.
Sadly, our police officers have no time and resources to protect the citizens they have sworn to protect. Is it any wonder why no one respects them anymore? Their loyalty to President Jagdeo and his ruling elite is touching, but misplaced.
We remember during a protest, Ms. Jagan being unceremoniously tossed into a police van. In tribute to Ms. Janet Jagan’s courage in protesting arbitrary abuse of power, let us sing to current Dictatorial President Jagdeo:
All I wanted for Christmas
is my total Dictatorship,
my total Dictatorship
see my total Dictatorship,
Gee, if I could only
have my total Dictatorship,
then I could wish you
“Merry Christmas!”
A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.
