May 20, 2010 Letters
Dear Editor,
A hearty thanks to all the teams for performances in the recent ICC Twenty20 competition, and congratulation to England on their well deserve win.
The reason I’ve decided to write this letter now is because I’ve watched most of the match and was monitoring the press, but saw no mention of what bothered me throughout the event and previous matches played in the Caribbean.
Our population in Guyana has not reached a million people as yet, but we love our cricket and no matter what teams are playing Guyanese give the game a lot of support.
Mr. Editor, my main concern is when the games are being played, at intervals between the overs or when a wicket is lost the sound system there played songs to keep the crowds alive, which is very nice.
However, in Guyana and in the other territories not one song by a Guyanese was aired. This I found to be disrespectful to Guyanese.
The reason I am saying that is watching all the matches via television that was played in this country and other countries I cannot recall hearing any Guyanese songs being played and that is very hurtful.
When the game was played in Barbados a lot of songs by Bajan artistes were played; in Trinidad you hear the Trinidadians and the list goes on.
I would like to know why this discrimination to us Guyanese. The last time I checked we had a lot of good Guyanese singers whose voices could be heard around the world.
Only recently, Dave Martin was on a television programme talking of his music and about a new CD he’s releasing.
That man composed one song about cricket. Why aren’t they given equal time like other Caribbean countries give to their artistes?
Why are our artistes silent on this matter? Why is the government silent on this matter? Aren’t they the ones who hire the sound system?
