Dear Editor,
Allow me this space to express my total disappointment with the manner in which the Minister of Natural Resources, Mr. Raphael Trotman and Kaieteur News seek to display one (1) aspect of Guyana Forestry Commission’s Operations (published Thursday February 25th 2016). While it is at the same time distorting, and concealing some integral facts in relation to “the Granting of OW/Timber Concession”.
Firstly, according to table (1) “Allocation of State Forest to Concession Holders”. There are 20 recorded concessions granted of the 20, (4) are as follows. The names are;
AMCAR TSA 01/90 44.449 Thousand Hectares
BARAMA Company Ltd TSA 02/91 218,910 Thousand Hectares
Demerara Timber Ltd TSA 03/91 292,343 Thousand Hectares
These concessions were granted prior to 1992 and they amounted to 47% of the “Allocated Forest” which were granted.
Another eight concessions were allocated to Locals. The names are;
A Mazaharally and Sons TSA 06/85 65,6463 Thousand Hectares
A Mazaharally and Sons TSA 09/85 91,209 Thousand Hectares
Ganesh Singh and Brs Logging Co.TSA 01/09 33,244 Thousand Hectares
Interior Forest Industries Inc TSA 11/85 70,442 Thousand Hectares
Toolsie Persaud Ltd (Manaka and Takatw) TSA 04/85 123,857 Thousand Hectares
Wanatobo Forest Resource Inc TSA 05/07 28,467 Thousand Hectares
(Area originally issued 1988 as small concession)
Wellen Timber and Trading Co TSA 05/91 56,610 Thousand Hectares
Willen Timber and Trading Co TSA 10/85 55,998 Thousand Hectares
Nagasar Sawh (Inactive) TSA 02/85 29,176 Thousand Hectares
My point is of you look at allocation to foreigners 47% +12.3 %( local), these add up to 59.3% of “Allocated Forest”. All these allocations were made prior to 1992. By this I mean under the P.N.C Government/Administration.
Therefore 82% of concessions were granted (according to figures), 59.3% were granted prior to 1992 and 23% were granted under the PPP. In concluding, as a long standing member of the logging fraternity, who have been around for quite some time and who have paid his dues in both taxes and Losses. I would request that the publishers and those responsible for publishing of the article, as well as members of the National Resource Administration should restructure their article to illustrate to the public, the truth which is of the 82% of forest allocated, 59.3% were granted before 1992 under the P.N.C and only 23% were issued under PPP.0 after 1992. So I suggest you properly state the facts and redress this issue before you cast a bad image of G.F.C’s present Administration. Who in my view is doing a very fine job.
A Noel
