DEAR EDITOR,
Over the past 10 years, I have witnessed the country go down one of the darkest roads I have ever seen. The cocaine trade spiraled out of control and the newly-created masses used their illegal wealth to corrupt every state institution and almost every business directly and indirectly with their need to launder money to clean it.
The money laundering has now completely penetrated every single industry in Guyana and many of the ‘so called’ businessmen are heavily involved, with no end game other than more illegal activities.
The wealth has led to a false economy not ebbing from entrepreneurial wealth creation or investments from abroad. It has destroyed so many decent and honest businesses who have packed up and left. Others are hanging on by a thread with no voice and nowhere to turn to get support or lodge complaints, since the very government entities are corrupted by the money launderers and cocaine kingpins.
The corruption has led the state institutions over the years to channel monies, contracts and support into the coffers of the same launderers and dirty businesses because they will pay the kickbacks, bribes and buy the fancy equipment and develop that image of success.
With all the corruption, money laundering and cocaine trade comes the crimes. The hired guns kill with impunity for the cocaine kingpins and the businesses laundering represent the corrupted government agencies interests for many reasons. The crime situation in Guyana will not be solved until the drug trade is stopped and the money launderers flushed up and a total assault on corruption in all levels of government.
The new government failing to tackle the cocaine trade, money laundering and corruption would never be able to create a level playing field to encourage legitimate businesses to flourish and encourage foreign investment. Lack of foreign investments and local businesses being able to flourish means that the money launderers, cocaine kingpins and corruption win, the Guyanese people lose and the new Government fails.
We must clean-up our economy and get rid of the ills of society continuing to affect and retard our development while forming a platform for criminal activities, corruption and an ever-expanding drug trade.
I am so glad the new government is promising to let the DEA get full access to Guyana. Also pushing the Code of Conduct to fight corruption and taking steps to fight drug trafficking at all levels. We as Guyanese need to wish them luck and truly hope they succeed to do what the previous government never truly wanted.
