Dear Editor,
Kindly afford me space in your newspaper to challenge the political parties to spend more time discussing real issues and desist from “gutter politics”. As a Guyanese professional with an open analytical mind and eligibility to vote this November, I am disgusted by the lack of discussion of real issues. Isn’t it more important that the presidential candidates and their political partners openly discuss and debate real issues affecting this country?
And shouldn’t it be done in a professional manner without having to resolve to attacking colleagues and making bold accusations without offering any evidence? As a citizen too young to know what happened under the PNC’s 28 years of rule, I frankly don’t care for the constant comparison. Isn’t Forbes Burnham dead, and hasn’t it been over 10 years since the death of Cheddi Jagan?
Surely it is an insult to my Guyanese education to imply that because someone belongs to a specific political party he/she has no vision for Guyana, or that I must vote for a political party because my forefathers did. My blunt opinion is that the longer someone is a politician, the more adapted he/she is to lying, corruption and turning a blind eye – and of course some are better at adapting than others. Therefore, the difference I see in the presidential candidates is in their ideas and plans for this country, and that of those they choose to form the government.
What are your plans to deal with crime, corruption and discrimination? How do we develop our economy, infrastructure, and education? How do you plan to secure our borders? What will you do to improve healthcare? What about constitution reform? How much is your plan for development going to cost and where is the money coming from?
Surely these are addressed in your manifestos, but let us hear about them more often. Surely, you think of me unkindly to feel it more important to talk about “vultures and carrion crows”, “Robb St. gang” etc. Such senseless attacks speak more of you than it does of the subject of your slander.
My fellow Guyanese, it is our duty as a people to challenge the politicians to put Guyana first, and not treat us as uneducated fools full of ignorance and hatred. How sad and unfortunate it is that with three weeks to the elections, our choice of government is largely based on our ideas of the past rule of Forbes Burnham, ideas of Cheddi Jagan, and voting patterns of our forefathers?
With this attitude, Guyana will never move forward regardless of who wins the election! Let us be smart, go out and vote this November. Choose a political party based on their superior plans for you, your village or town, your children and grandchildren, your neighbour and friends, and the advancement of Guyana.
