Kaieteur News – Growing up in a family of contractors, 29-year-old Kevon Ceon Thom loved to do plumbing and as he got older he opted to become his own boss. Thom ventured into the world of entrepreneurship in 2019 as part of his goal to further advance his skills in plumbing to not only personally elevate himself but provide services to those in need.
This week’s young entrepreneur is the owner of Kevon’s Contracting and Plumbing services, a business venture which is deep-rooted in his family history.
Having grown up with his grandparents in the mining town of Linden, Region 10, Thom in an interview with The Waterfalls said that after 17 years he decided to move to Georgetown.
“I then started my journey into the world of work. I was employed on day jobs with contractors prior to becoming self employed,” he recalled.
He shared that on May 7, 2019; he decided to turn his skills into a business.
According to the young man, Kevon’s Contracting and Plumbing Services’offers are plumbing installation, maintenance services and repairing.
“When asked about the support he received since launch, Thom explained that it has been a challenge in terms of awareness about his business venture and growing as an entrepreneur.
“However, my family has supported me positively with motivation to keep going along this journey. My dedication to learning more about my field has enlightened me in this area keeping myself updated with the latest in the plumbing aspect and ensuring I bring quality service to my supporters,” he mentioned.
Noting that this entrepreneurial journey was not an easy walk in the park, he said the challenges he faced was growing his clientele and having proper knowledge as it relates to marketing and promoting his business.
Not letting the challenges weigh him down, Thom related that in overcoming this aspect he would interact with clients thereby getting an understanding of their needs. “I would also research on ways to improve my service by learning new best practices in the plumbing field,” he pointed out.
While he continues to provide services to the best of his ability, Thom stated that in terms of long-term goals for ‘Kevon’s Contracting and Plumbing Services’, he is working towards making his establishment “a family venture”.
“Working with my family to be able to give a rounded service to our clients is the goal,” he added.
As he takes steps towards making his business venture a well known brand in Guyana, our featured entrepreneur believes that young entrepreneurs give a sense of encouragement as it relates to striving to build one’s own future.
“Starting young gives you a sense of pride; that even in your youth, you can achieve a strong base of becoming your own employer,” he expressed.
Further, Thom is of the view that to boost small businesses locally, “Support on the local market and publicity given to small businesses,” can surely help young entrepreneurs in a great way in building their brand.
