Kaieteur News – Long time ago, Guyana had a boxing gym name The Republicans. Dem boys seh deh wasn’t just punching bag and skipping rope—dem had serious fighters. But if yuh tell somebody now dat de Republicans was a gym, dem might seh, “Oh! Is a new political party forming in jail?”
Because nowadays, people hollering dat prisoners got rights. Dem seh dem got de right to vote. Dem boys seh if you got de right to vote, then what stop yuh from having de right to run fuh President too?
One man seh if a man lock up in Camp Street, he should still be able to pick de President. Another man whisper, “Well, leh he run fuh de position too.” But hold on! De same law seh if yuh get convict and serve time, yuh can’t sit in parliament. So wait—yuh could pick who gon sit down, but yuh can’t sit down yuhself?
That’s like telling a man he could buy de rum, but he can’t drink it or telling a woman she could bake de cassava bread but can’t taste it.
Dem boys seh it gettin real confusing. If a man in jail could vote, and he could form a political party—maybe call it The Incarcerated Alliance—what gon happen when he win a seat? He gon zoom in to parliament from cell block C?
And if de President come from jail, de inauguration gon happen behind bars? De oath gon read: “I solemnly swear to uphold de law, even though I breaching it last week?”
Dem boys seh this is madness. One foot in de prison, de other in de parliament. Is either yuh in or yuh out—not halfway with one foot in de manhole and the other on the red carpet.
But knowing Guyana, don’t be surprise if next election got campaign posters inside Timehri jail and hustings in Lusignan lock-ups.
Dem boys seh if jailbirds voting, de next thing yuh gon hear is cell-to-cell canvassing with manifesto in one hand and mosquito net in the other!
Talk half. Leff half.
