Kaieteur News – A 26-year-old mason of Kitty, Georgetown was released on Thursday on bail on a charge of malicious damage to property.
The accused Shakeel Lawrence of Benn Street, Kitty, Georgetown, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore.
Lawrence pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on May 7, 2025 at Ketley Street, Charlestown, Georgetown, he maliciously damaged the left front passenger’s door and glass of motorcar PAC 5043 valued $324,900 property of Dewani Lampkin.
The prosecution told the court that the men are not friends, but they are known to each other because the defendant is accusing the victim of sleeping with his girlfriend.
The court heard that on May 6, 2025, Lampkin parked his car at his residence and on May 7, 2025 at approximately 2:43, the victim was awoken by loud sounds coming from outside. When he checked, he allegedly saw Lawrence pelting his motorcar with a flammable substance. Lampkin then called out to ‘Shakeel’ who turned around and started to verbally abuse him and accused him of sleeping with his girlfriend.
The prosecution objected to bail stating that the defendant committed an offence while on bail for a robbery offence that was committed in Berbice. They noted that Lawrence is expected to return to court today for a break and enter charge. In closing, the prosecution also mentioned that if bail is granted, the accused is a possible flight risk and may interface with the victual compliant and may commit other offences.
Lawrence was represented by Attorney-at-law Audreanna Thompson who pleaded his case. She told the court that her client is willing to accept any conditions imposed by the court. Thompson also argued that while Lawrence allegedly committed the other offences he is not convicted. The lawyer noted that both parties did exchange words on the day in question. Magistrate Azore taking into consideration that Lawrence is always present for his Berbice court matter released him on $150,000 bail. The matter has been adjourned for July 2, 2025.
