Kaieteur News – A 29-year-old man was charged on Thursday with causing the death of a 52-year-old construction worker, Antonio Ignatius, by dangerous driving.
The defendant, Royden Daniels, appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Clive Nurse. Daniels pleaded not guilty to the charge and was granted $150,000 bail.
He is expected to return to court on July 3, 2025.
Daniels was reportedly the driver of a car that struck Ignatius last Saturday around 19:15hrs.
Police in a statement said that Ignatius was killed while crossing Agriculture Road at Triumph, East Coast Demerara.
“Enquiries disclosed that motorcar #PAH 5305 was proceeding north along the western side of Agriculture Road at a fast rate,” police said before adding that “The driver alleged that the pedestrian suddenly walked across the road from east to west, into the path of his motorcar and a collision occurred”.
Ignatius was flung into the air before landing on the road. He was pronounced dead at the scene by an emergency response team attached to the Melanie Fire Station.
