Kaieteur News – The Guyana Police Force (GPF) continues to withhold a copy of the final autopsy report from the family of Adriana Younge and has told their lawyers he must go to court if he wants the document.
Dexter Todd, the lead attorney for the family of 11-year-old Younge, had issued a letter to the Guyana Police Force requesting details of the investigation and a copy of the final autopsy report. The police responded that they would not cooperate without a court order. This was revealed by Dr. Todd to Kaieteur News. When asked if the police had responded to the questions posed in the letter, Dr. Todd stated, “The GPF said they will not cooperate outside a court order.”
He stated that the Commissioner of Police, Clifton Hicken, responded to his letter on Wednesday. While Todd did not share additional details of the police’s reply, he said an update would be provided in the coming days.
The questions sent to the GPF were formulated by United States forensic pathologist Dr. Carol Terry, who conducted a second autopsy on Adriana’s body in the U.S. According to Dr. Todd, the pathologist cannot proceed with her report unless she receives information from the police. As such, a second letter was sent to both Hicken and Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum on June 3 in pursuit of the requested information.
During an appearance on the Reset Talk Show, hosted by Jr. Giddings on June 4, Dr. Todd was joined by Adriana’s mother, Amecia Simon, and aunt, Ameka Lewis, to provide the public with an update on the case. Dr. Todd disclosed that Dr. Terry had submitted a six-page document containing over 100 detailed questions related to the police investigation. “I have in my hands a six-page document submitted to me by this pathologist asking close to a hundred and something questions from the investigations before Dr. Terry even comes to preparing a report,” he stated.
Among the pathologist’s concerns was a peculiar marking found on Adriana’s body. “The tile pattern—because there are marks on Adriana’s foot that she [Dr. Terry] wants to see whether those are consistent with the tile pattern,” Dr. Todd explained. Dr. Todd emphasised that Dr. Terry is meticulously examining every mark found on Adriana’s body before determining the cause of death. “Every mark on that body must be accounted for, and that is what this pathologist is attempting to do,” he said.
“We dispatched a second letter to the Commissioner of Police [and] the Crime Chief in which we are seeking a number of answers in relation to questions posed by Dr. Terry in relation to the investigation,” he said. Dr. Todd also reaffirmed the need for Dr. Terry to access the post-mortem examination (PME) report that was completed on April 28 by a team of international pathologists.
Adriana’s lifeless body was discovered on April 24 in the swimming pool of the Double Day International Hotel—just 20 hours after she was reported missing during a family trip to Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo.
A post-mortem examination (PME) was conducted on April 28 by a three-member international pathology team: Dr. Shubhakar Karra Paul from Barbados, Dr. Gary Collins, Chief Medical Examiner of Delaware (USA), and Dr. Glenn Rudner of Mount Sinai Hospital. The team concluded that the child’s cause of death was drowning. Unconvinced by the findings, Adriana’s family arranged for a second autopsy in the United States. Her body was flown to Atlanta, Georgia, where Dr. Carol Terry, Chief Medical Examiner of Gwinnett County, conducted the procedure. However, the pathologist stated that drowning cannot be conclusively stated as the cause of death.
