Kaieteur News – A group of women identified as relatives of a government minister were caught on camera attacking and physically assaulting their neighbour on Thursday at New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara (WCD).
While the minister has no involvement in the matter the women are being accused of using his name to avoid the law. The victim, Priyah Harrisawan said that the women have been harassing and bullying her for months over the use of an alleyway that the said minister had built for residents to have access to their homes.
Harrisawan is claiming they are trying to prevent her from using the alleyway, telling her to walk around but there is no other access to her property. She alleged that she has made reports to police but the women would always boast that they are the minister’s relatives and would use him to avoid being prosecuted. On Thursday tensions between the women escalated into violence and was caught on nearby security cameras. “We live in one trackway and I does have to pass there every morning and afternoon and every time I pass is a problem is a throw down talk or something and this afternoon (Thursday) when I pass I was talking to my daughter” the woman said while adding “…I don’t know if the minister sister’s kids think I was referring to them because…they run out and they start quarrelling, talking about how I curse up the children.” An argument erupted but according to Harrisawan she walked away shortly after.
Footage showed the women following her to her gate as they continued to curse the woman and could be heard saying “you could go bring who you want we don’t kay’.
Harrisawan was in her doorway but things took a violent turn when they hurled an object at her from the gate where they were standing. Harrisawan retaliated by hurling the object back at them before retreating to her home. The women reacted by entering her yard and attacking her. The footage showed them grabbing her by her hair as she tried to escape them. Nothing else was seen as they tumbled into Harrisawan’s home and out of the camera’s view.
The next time they would return to the camera’s view is someone was seen trying to deescalate the situation by trying to pull one of the attackers away. According to Harrisawan that was after they had dealt punches to her face and dealt three lashes to her head with a piece of wood that was behind her door. The matter was reported to the police and the women were summoned to the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station.
However, Harrisawan claimed that not all of her attackers turned up at the station and when she enquired why the others were not there, she was told that they don’t have to come because they are the minister’s relatives. Kaieteur News reached out to the minister to find out if he was aware that the suspects might be using his name to avoid the law.
He did not directly acknowledge that they were his relatives but said he does not want to be “roped into the matter” and does not know anything about them using his name to avoid the law. “I don’t know anything about that (them using his name) but I know is a personal matter between neighbours who can’t live good with one another and the matter is in the hands of the police”.
