Trinidad Express – West Indies committed the cardinal limited overs sin of not batting their full complement of overs and paid the price Friday night in Tarouba.
Dismissed for 280 in 49 overs the first One-Day International against Pakistan at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy, they lost by five wickets, with the visitors winning with seven balls to spare.
An unbroken century sixth wicket stand of 104 off 70 balls between Hasan Nawaz (52, 33 balls) and Hussain Talat (41 off 37), clinched the match and gave the Pakistanis a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Nawaz, in his debut ODI, made himself Player-of-the-Match with and innings that blossomed from a sluggish start. Having been restricted by spinners Roston Chase (8-0-41-1) and Gudakesh Motie (10-0-42-1), they capitalised when the quicker bowlers came back bowling a ball drenched in dew.
“The toss definitely has a big factor to play,” said WI skipper Shai Hope after the match. But he acknowledged that, “maybe we could have got a bit more runs to put them under a bit more pressure.”
Asked to bat first after Mohammad Rizwan won the toss for Pakistan, West Indies were in control over the first half of their innings.
They got to the half-way 25th over on 135 for three. Evin Lewis, returning to the side for his first game in this home series season after injury and Keacy Carty had made up for the first over dismissal of Brandon King with a 77-run second wicket partnership off 82 balls.
Lewis got the top-score of the match, a typically thumping 60 with five fours and three sixes. Carty got 30 off 39 deliveries, but both were dismissed without fully capitalising on their starts. Carty in particular was careless in being caught off the back of his bat by slip fielder Agha Salman as he tried to sweep wrist spinner Sufiyan Muqeem in the 15th over.

Skipper Hope made another ODI half-century – 55 (77 balls, four fours) – and added 64 for the fifth wicket with Chase (53 off 54). But again, neither of them were able to bat into to the last five overs, Chase falling to Naseem Shah in the same over in which he reached that sixth ODI fifty.
The failure of the top order to finish the job came back to hurt the Windies.
Shaheen Shah Afridi returned to add the wickets of Hope, Romario Shepherd (four) and Shamar Joseph (eight) to the opening wicket of King. The West Indies lost their last four wickets for 47 runs despite another handy knock by Motie (31 off 18).
The Pakistan seamers came back well, bowling fast and straight with some movement through the air. The WI batters could not adjust their approach to ensure they maximised the 50 overs.
Jayden Seales struck early in the Pakistan chase, having Ayub caught by keeper Hope in the third over. But partnerships of 47, 55 and 40 for the second, third and fourth wickets involving Babar Azam (47), Rizwan (53) and Nawaz, kept the visitors in the game, before ODI rookies Nawaz and Talat ensured that Pakistan would not implode.
Hope and his men were left ruing again their inability to put a complete game together. They will try to do so today in a must-win game, once more in Tarouba.
Summarised scores: WEST INDIES 280, 49 overs (Evin Lewis 60, Shai Hope 55, Roston Chase 53, Gudakesh Motie 31; Shaheen Shah Afridi 4/51, Naseem Shah 3/55) vs PAKISTAN 284-5, 48.5 overs (Hasan Nawaz 63 n.o., Mohammad Rizwan 53, Babar Azam 47, Hussain Talat 41 n.o.; Shamar Joseph 2/65).
Result – Pakistan won by five wickets.
