Kaieteur Sports – Representatives of the Azruddin Mohamed led WE INVESTMENT IN NATIONHOOD (WIN) said if elected to government on September 1, they want to do a forensic audit to assess the value of the Global Super League to Guyana’s cricket system.
“We (WIN) would do audits on the GSL in particular, because we want to see for all of the investment that are being made if we are getting positive returns,” said Dr. Mark DeFrance whose A New and United Guyana (ANUG) joined forces with Mohamed on June 28th, to contest the election.
DeFrance continued: “We know the monies invested in the GSL are our (Guyana’s) taxpayer dollars.”
“Whether you want to say Exxon Mobil is the major sponsor – we are paying that back through cost oil and they’re getting it back – so it’s Guyana that is paying for everything.”
Dr. DeFrance on behalf WIN and Mohamed are the second political party to ask questions about the GSL, in conversation journalist Rawle Toney on #HearMeOut podcast on July 27th.
It follows APNU leader Aubrey Norton saying on the first edition of the podcast on July 19, that his party would not necessarily support the initiative if elected.
DeFrance on behalf WIN and Mohamed also joined the APNU in calling out the Guyana Cricket Board for endorsing the PPP.
“When you talk about political interference in sport, this is something that is not supposed to happen,” he said.
“Yet we have seen a whole sporting body (Guyana Cricket Board) endorse the government, which is something we (WIN) try to stay as far away as possible.”
In a July 2nd statement, APNU described the GCB’s endorsement as “a sad day for cricket” and “outrageous”, raising concerns that the Board’s alignment with the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP) could taint the integrity of player selection, financial governance, and international cricket relations.
Dr. DeFrance on behalf of WIN also called out the government for having international cricket commentators publicly endorsing President Irfan Ali for a second term in office on live broadcast during the GSL.
“And when you see you use such platforms (GSL) for political purposes, we even saw commentators singing the “One Guyana” mantra and promoting the government, which is not something that should be done,” said DeFrance
The recently released WIN Manifesto under the subtitle “WIN FOR SPORTS” said if elected they will create a national sports network that includes; Infrastructural access, Win Sports Scholarships, School Games 2.0, Elite Athlete Pathway, Athlete to Ambassador system, Sports for All system and a National Sports Education & Certification Framework.
The public now waits Mohamed himself speak on cricket and sports, to elaborate further on these manifesto sport related points.
