Guyanese won’t be required to pay US$15,000 travel bond to US – Ambassador
Kaieteur News – United States Ambassador to Guyana Nicole Theriot on Wednesday said that Guyanese applying for tourist or business visas to the United States, at this point, will not be required to pay a bond of up to US$15,000.
This clarification comes in light of a recent Federal Register Notice which outlines a new pilot programme by the U.S. Department of State that will require select visa applicants to pay a refundable travel bond.
According to the notice the “visa bond pilot programme” is a 12-month initiative that will begin on August 20. It applies to temporary visitors for business or pleasure (B-1/B-2) who are nationals of countries with high visa overstay rates, limited screening and vetting capabilities, or those that offer citizenship-by-investment without residency requirements.
Consular officers at their discretion can require applicants to post bonds of US$5,000, US$10,000, or US$15,000. The funds will be refunded if travellers depart the U.S. in accordance with the terms of their visas.
“Currently, Guyana is not included on that list. It does not apply to Guyanese citizens applying for a visa,” Theriot stated on the sidelines of an event at the Umana Yana.
While she was unable to give a number of how many Guyanese have overstayed their visas, she noted, “but Guyana’s overstay rate is not very high. In my opinion, it is not problematic, in that sense. So, at this moment, Guyana is not included in that list but obviously anything could change but I would be very surprised.”
Earlier this year, the United States of America Embassy in Guyana warned travelers about the consequences of overstaying on a US visa, noting that such actions can result in severe penalties, including permanent ban on re-entry and criminal prosecution.
The US Embassy noted that overstaying a visa is not only a violation of US immigration, but also a serious offence that can have long-lasting effects on an individual’s ability to travel to the United States in the future.
