Kaieteur News – Former Chief Parliamentary Counsel Cecil Dhurjon, CCH, AA, SC has died at the age of 96.
President Irfaan Ali in a message of condolence posted on his Facebook page said, “ It is with profound sadness that I have learnt of the passing of one of Guyana’s finest legal minds and most dedicated public servants, Mr. Cecil Dhurjon, CCH, AA, SC, former Chief Parliamentary Counsel.”
President Ali said Dhurjon dedicated more than six decades of “distinguished service to Guyana, four of which he spent as Chief Parliamentary Counsel.”
“His outstanding contribution to shaping the legislative framework of post-independent Guyana is a legacy that will continue to resonate for generations to come.
I extend, on behalf of my government and my own behalf, deepest condolences to his wife, Ananda, his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. May his soul rest in eternal peace,” the president said.
Similarly, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall, SC expressed sadness on the death of Dhurjon.
Nandlall in a Facebook page said that Dhurjon died two months shy of his 97th birthday. He described him as “A distinguished, enduring and stellar legislative draftsman.”
“Mr. Dhurjon was one of the chief architects of Guyana’s post independent legislative landscape. He was the longest serving Chief Parliamentary Counsel of Guyana and arguably, the longest holder of such office in the entire Commonwealth. Mr. Dhurjon served Guyana with unmatched dedication for over four decades as Chief Parliamentary Counsel and in the drafting department of the Attorney General Chambers for over six decades,” said the Attorney General.
Nandlall said too that the former Chief Parliamentary Counsel served under every Attorney General of Guyana, including, him between 2011- 2015.
“He resigned at age 90! It will be near impossible in the foreseeable future for any other to surpass the number of legislation he would have worked on in his extraordinarily long career.
For his remarkable contribution, he was appropriately conferred with silk and two National Awards, the Golden Arrow of Achievement and the Cacique Crown of Honor. The legacy of his work will endure for generations to come,” Nandlall said as he extended condolences to Dhurjon’s family.
