Kaieteur News – The Azruddin Mohamed – led We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party has promised to launch a Commission of Inquiry (CoI) into corruption allegations made by Chinese businessman Zhi Rong Su against sitting Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo, if elected to Office on September 1.
The new political party headed by the billionaire businessman unveiled its manifesto on Thursday and among the things it intends to pursue within the first 1o0 days in office is the COI.
A section of its manifesto titled anti-corruption and transparency, number 23 states, “Launch a Commission of Inquiry into the allegations of corruption between Bharrat Jagdeo and Chinese business man by Vice News.”
A Vice News documentary premiered in February 2022 reported that Guyana was up for sale and featured Jagdeo as the main character. Su, now Jagdeo’s former tenant, was heard in an interview accusing him of allegedly collecting bribes for large developmental projects undertaken in the country.
Su was at the time being interviewed by reporters posing as Chinese businessmen looking for business opportunities in Guyana.
The undercover reporters also interviewed Jagdeo at his Goedverwagting, East Coast Demerara (ECD) home where he told them that he gives his Chinese friend all the support to facilitate investment transactions.
The Vice President was subsequently interviewed by Vice News and confronted about his relationship with Su. He told the reporter that Su was his friend and tenant but denied being involved in any wrong-doing.
Subsequently, Jagdeo publicly denied the allegations after the documentary was released. He also sued Su for $50 million.
According to legal documents seen by this publication, Jagdeo through his attorneys, Manoj Narayan and C.V. Satram, outlined that the statements made by Su and were contained in the news broadcast clearly imputed criminal and unlawful conduct on the part of the Vice President. The attorneys described Su’s statements as “defamatory and slanderous.” The lawsuit outlined that the said words were calculated to disparage Mr. Jagdeo personally and professionally.
According to the lawsuit, owing to the statements that were aired in the documentary, Jagdeo has suffered public condemnation, humiliation, ridicule, and embarrassment.
Additionally, the legal document noted the statements have caused serious injury to the Vice President’s reputation and his political standing locally and internationally.
Last year, Kaieteur reported that Jagdeo was awaiting a default judgement after Su failed to appear in court.
“We are awaiting judgment by the court, that’s the update,” Jagdeo said.
