Kaieteur Sports – The Law Offices of Hughes, Fields and Stoby has been recruited to represent a young woman from Berbice who has accused a well-known Guyanese and West Indies cricketer of rape, a senior lawyer at the firm disclosed yesterday.
“She will be represented by a number of attorneys from the law firm,” the senior representative of the law firm stated.
The alleged victim’s family, speaking exclusively with Kaieteur News, has expressed deep concern over what they describe as a sustained effort by law enforcement authorities to suppress and cover up the incident, which allegedly occurred on March 3, 2023, at a residence in New Amsterdam, Berbice.
At the time, the alleged victim was 18 years old.
According to the victim’s mother, the accused was familiar to the family and had earned the trust of her daughter.
“She trusted him,” the mother stated.
On the day of the incident, the cricketer reportedly picked the young woman up from her workplace under the pretense of socializing.
“She called me and said, ‘Mom, I’m going out with (name provided), I’ll be home by a certain time.’ He took her to a house in (area provided) where several men were seen hanging out in the yard. She said after seeing other people there, she felt safe. But then he asked her to come upstairs to get something. That’s when it happened,” the mother recounted.
The mother alleged that once inside the house, the cricketer forcibly removed the young woman’s clothing and sexually assaulted her.
“He ripped off her pants, held her down, and did what he wanted. My child has not been the same since. She’s been broken ever since that day,” she said through tears.
A police report was filed the following day. The victim was examined by a medical professional and administered medication as part of standard treatment for potential exposure to sexually transmitted infections.
“She became very ill from the side effects of the medication. They told us it was to protect her in case of STDs,” the mother added.
The family has further alleged that from the onset, the investigation was mishandled, beginning with efforts by the cricketer’s relatives to settle the matter privately.
“Let it be known, we didn’t take any money. We don’t want money. I want justice for what he did to my daughter,” the mother stated firmly.
The family asserts that there is substantial evidence contradicting any denial of the incident, including phone records of calls made by the accused to the victim and eyewitnesses who reportedly saw them together on the day of the incident. The family claims this evidence was disregarded by investigators.
They further allege that the accused voluntarily surrendered to police, accompanied by his father, and was promptly released on station bail.
Kaieteur News was informed by the victim’s family that a Woman Sergeant (name provided) was the lead investigator assigned to the case involving the prominent cricketer.
When contacted, Region 6 Commander Shiv-Persaud Bacchus confirmed that the Woman Sergeant is still stationed at the Region 6 Headquarters in New Amsterdam.
He stated that he would inquire into whether she was indeed leading the investigation. However, despite promising to return a call with further information, no follow-up was received up to the time of this report.
Disturbingly, the family contends this is not the first time the accused has been implicated in a sexual assault allegation. They alleged that prior to the 18-year-old’s incident, the accused was allegedly involved in the rape of a teen relative under the age of consent.
Though he was reportedly arrested in that matter, the victim later withdrew her statement, and the case was closed. Sources at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) confirmed that charges were not pursued after the alleged victim withdrew her cooperation.
DELAYS
Despite the serious nature of the current allegation, the family says they were repeatedly kept in the dark about the progress of the investigation. A detailed timeline provided by the family reveals troubling delays and questionable decisions by both the police and the DPP’s office.
The case file was reportedly submitted to the DPP in May 2023, but it wasn’t until October 3, 2023, that the family learned it had been returned with no charges recommended, and without any formal communication to the complainant or her family.
In December 2023, following a review by a new investigator, the family was informed that charges had finally been recommended. However, the accused was allegedly out of the jurisdiction at the time.
Despite assurances that he would be arrested upon his return, no such action was taken.
By February 2024, the family was informed that the case file had been recalled by the DPP. No clear explanation was given, and the current location of the file remains unknown, further fueling fears that the case may never see a courtroom.
The family also claims that sensitive information they provided to investigators was leaked to the accused’s relatives and that the initial lead investigator had personal ties to the cricketer.
The emotional toll on the victim has been severe. According to her mother, the young woman continues to suffer from depression and suicidal thoughts.
“We want the world to know what happened. This can’t keep happening, and nothing is done because of who he is,” the mother said.
