Co-founder of the Safe Haven app Angenie Abel (right) and Marketing Services Lead at MMG Charleston Hansdell
Kaieteur News – Safe Haven, Guyana’s first digital platform that connects families with certified caregivers, was launched on Friday at the Palazzo on Camp and Lamaha Streets in Georgetown.
The launch marked a significant milestone for co-founder of the Safe Haven app Angenie Abel, who shared that the platform was created to offer caregiving services for both children and the elderly. To make the service more accessible and user-friendly, Abel partnered with Mobile Money Guyana (MMG) to streamline payment transactions and enhance the overall caregiving experience.
During her address, Abel shared the deeply personal inspiration behind the creation of the Safe Haven app. “Today is a really proud moment for me and for the Safe Haven team, because what you are seeing here is something that came from a very personal space,” she said.
Abel recounted times in her life when she desperately needed caregiving support but couldn’t find reliable or experienced help. “When my father needed support, we struggled to find someone with experience and reliability. When my son was born, we needed a little break from time to time, but again, the options were few and far,” she explained.
Recognizing this gap in the caregiving space, Abel was motivated to create a solution that would serve not only her family but others facing similar challenges. “That is where Safe Haven was born, from the desire to fill the gap with something safe, accessible, and built with the reality of Guyanese families in mind,” she added.
Abel further explained how the app functions, describing Safe Haven as a dual-purpose digital platform. “Safe haven is a digital platform that is built to help family, source trusted care givers weather for child care and elder care, at the same time it is a space where caregivers can find real work opportunities with structure,” she said.
Highlighting the app’s development, she said: “Since 2023 we have made many attempts, hit roadblocks and kept pushing. We built a website at first and then an app. But it just wasn’t enough to just have the platform. We wanted a truly seamless experience, from the moment someone books care to when the caregiver shows up at the person’s door.”
She noted that one of the biggest challenges for Safe Haven was integrating a user-friendly digital payment solution.
“There just wasn’t a user-friendly digital solution in Guyana to support this kind of service.”
After years of research and development, Safe Haven successfully integrated MMG, allowing families to book caregivers and complete secure payments directly through their phones.
“Now clients can search for available caregivers based on their needs and schedule, and complete their booking and payments securely right from their phone. The app is designed to prioritize the client experience while the website is built to manage caregiver onboarding and document uploads.”
She emphasized that all caregivers on the Safe Haven platform will be fully certified to ensure the highest standard of care for families. “Safety is everything. You will never see a caregiver on Safe Haven who hasn’t been properly screened. This includes police clearance, reference checks, and all relevant certifications. This isn’t just about convenience, it’s about trust and giving families peace of mind,” Abel stated.
The app is actively working to expand its services by introducing specialized care categories and implementing a structured training program aimed at ensuring a consistently high standard of care.
Additionally, Marketing Services Lead at MMG Charleston Hansdell, shared his optimism about the app’s potential impact. “Today marks a meaningful milestone as we witness the launch of a platform that is set to make a lasting impact on care services in Guyana. Users whether booking or offering care services can enjoy a fast, secure, and convenient way to make and receive payments,” he said.
