Kaieteur News – A fire of unknown origin destroyed a salon located on East Street, Georgetown, on Thursday.
The BV by Victoria Beauty Salon, located at Lot 345 East Street, operates from the top floor of a three-storey building owned by Nitin Mehra. The fire reportedly started in the salon. At the time of the fire, nobody was in the building.
Due to the swift response from the Guyana Fire Service (GFS), firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in a timely manner while saving the rest of the building.
Divisional Officer for Operations, Andrew Holder, told this publication that the Fire Service received the call at 1:54 pm, and at 1:58 pm, four water tenders arrived on the scene.
“Four water appliances from around Georgetown arrived with a total of approximately 15 firefighters. After some amount of challenge, we were able to gain entrance into the top floor of the building. After about 10 to 15 minutes of firefighting, we were able to completely extinguish the fire,” Officer Holder said.
Meanwhile, during an interview with Kaieteur News, the owner of the salon, Victoria Aguiar, a native of Brazil, was moved to tears. Through a translator, the woman said that she received a call informing her that the salon was on fire.
“We get a call that the fire start and the fire people just reach here and they have to investigate to know how the fire start. A man was passing and he call the fire people then we got the call. Every single thing in the store burn up, everything destroyed,” the friend relayed.
The GFS is investigating the incident.
