Dem Boys Seh…
Kaieteur News – Guyanese is de most political people pon dis earth. Not even America, wid all dem cable news and fancy think tanks, could beat we. In Guyana, every man is a political analyst, every woman is a pollster, and every child born is either red, yellow or green—long before dem get deh birth certificate.
Dem boys seh politics in other country is like weather. People talk ‘bout it, den move on wid dem life. But in Guyana? Politics is religion, sport, romance, and family feud—all bundled into one. You can’t even go to a wedding without hearing somebody whisper, “She boyfriend is a big man in the party, yuh know!”
All over de world, people know dem don’t control nuttin. Dem know politicians don’t read dem Facebook post or listen to dem bar talk. But in Guyana, we get delusions of grandeur. Man sit down in rum shop and argue ‘bout budget allocations like dem is Minister of Finance. One man seh, “Dem ain’t manage de sugar industry properly,” like he own a single cane.
Election time? Whole country does turn into political WWE. People does cuss, fall out, and stop talking to family and friend—not because dem get raise or dem child get scholarship—but because “we party win!” Or worse—“we party geh rob!”
Dem boys seh is a set-up. Because win or lose, de small man still punishing. After all de noise and rage, de pothole still deh. De garbage still pile up. De price for cooking oil still high. And dem who cuss and fight and split family still got to go hustle next day.
Guyanese believe when dem party win, light go shine from heaven and bills gon disappear. We put so much passion into politics, like it gon fix we marriage or cure gas pains.
Dem boys seh, maybe is time we realize de only “power to the people” we really get is blackout.
But don’t tell dem that. Next thing you hear is, “You soundin’ like yuh switch side!”
Talk half. Leff half
