Kaieteur Sports – The gates are set to fly open once again for Guyana’s biggest day in horse racing, as the Guyana Cup returns on August 11 at the iconic Rising Sun Turf Club, with a record $50 million purse up for grabs.
Unveiled yesterday at Banks DIH’s Thirst Park, the 2025 edition promises to surpass last year’s spectacle, both in the intensity of the races and the scale of entertainment on offer.
A total of 11 races are carded, and with over $50 million on the line, marking the largest prize pool in Guyana, and one of the most lucrative in the Caribbean.
But the Guyana Cup is no longer just a day at the races, it has evolved into a cultural spectacle, a perfect fusion of horsepower and star power.
Once the final gallop is done and the dust settles on the track, the Rising Sun Turf Club will transform into a concert arena, headlined by Caribbean music royalty; Machel Montano, Popcaan, and Ravi B.
At the official launch, Banks Beer Brand Manager Brian Choo-Hen, Guyana Cup Operations Manager Andre Rochford, and event founder Nasrudeen Mohamed Jr. spoke passionately about the growth and evolution of the Guyana Cup.
Last year’s feature race saw Olympic Kremlin, the pride of Slingerz Racing Stables, put on a masterclass in dominance, leaving a stacked field of ten in his wake to win the 1600m main event.
The chestnut sensation, later crowned 2024 Horse of the Year, surged past the finish line ahead of Nova Sol (2nd), 2023 champion Easy Time (3rd), and Oy Vey (4th), cementing his legacy as the new king of the turf.
As anticipation builds for August 17th, all eyes are on whether Olympic Kremlin can defend his crown, or if a new colt will rise to challenge the throne.
