Kaieteur News – The Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) on Monday publicly condemned a series of hateful and insensitive comments made by Facebook user Jennifer Ally, directed at 11-year-old Adriana Younge, who died tragically in April, and her grieving family.
Adriana’s lifeless body was recovered from a swimming pool at the Double Day Hotel in Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, on April 24—nearly 20 hours after she was reported missing during a family outing.
Since Adriana’s death, Ally has repeatedly posted offensive remarks on social media targeting both the deceased child and her loved ones. Her posts have drawn significant public criticism, prompting the ERC to formally intervene.
In a statement issued on Monday, the commission said, “The commission is appalled that, during a time of mourning, such vile and hateful expressions were publicly shared, further inflicting pain on a family already burdened by tragic loss. These actions violate the basic standards of decency and mutual respect that are essential to maintaining harmony in our multi-ethnic society.”
As a result, the ERC confirmed that it has launched a formal investigation into the matter.
“The ERC has officially opened a formal case into this matter and intends to engage Ms. Jennifer Ally. She is being requested to report to the commission to address the content and intent of her remarks,” the statement added.
The commission reminded the public that while freedom of expression is a protected right, it must be exercised with responsibility.
“The use of social media to spread hate, incite division, or cause psychological harm, especially in the context of bereavement, is unacceptable, contrary to the values enshrined in the Constitution of Guyana,” the ERC emphasised.
According to the ERC, it is actively monitoring the situation and intends to take appropriate action in line with its constitutional mandate to promote ethnic harmony, prevent hostility, and encourage respectful public discourse.
Jennifer Ally’s comments posted over the course of several months have been described as distasteful and deeply hurtful. Some of the remarks shared from her personal Facebook profile include:
“It’s sad they’ve returned to our beautiful country, here comes chaos and corruption in the name of politics because let’s face it, no one gives a f*** about a corpse at this point…
“The child deserves a Guinness world record for the most pathologist to perform and give the same results… and still needs 49 more. And a whole international investigator.”
“But out of joke and fun… where is granny? I ain’t seeing her in merica. As a matter of fact, I didn’t see her back since she mek she granddaughter died… maybe she feels guilty?”
